The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
