Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained little new information.
