Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
